Santa Clara Vanguard 2012 Pre-Tour Camp
During this project, I spent a week with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Like a marching band without wood instruments, Drum Corps rehearse during the winter and spring, and then tour two to three months in the summer, performing around the United States.
Each year, the Vanguard rents space at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, CA, for its pre-tour rehearsal. Living only a few hours away, I made plans to drive south and work with their director, Jeff Fiedler, on multimedia work for their website and social media.
Working with the Vanguard can be a challenge but very satisfying after the work is complete. They wake at seven each morning and rehearse in three four hour blocks, taking breaks for lunch and dinner. While it's easy to get rehearsal shots, it's important to stay alert during the drum corps off time to get inside photos of interaction between members and staff.
During my week at Weed, I produced one two minute multimedia clip and sixty still images for the Vanguard's use.
